Consumers are sheep without brain and the sale was always dirty business, in the middle age and today. Black Friday is a fake day created for western society/consumers, companies make prices 30% higher for some products and then they make it 30% cheaper and they cheat customers, stupid customers believe they really buy something for a cheaper price. And as always, in any case, they will make prices lower for products they can’t sell. Especially textile industry that depends from seasons, they make lower prices in any case. In September, Shopping Mall in Frederiksberg sells Hugo Boss, Polo and similar summer season clothes for the 50-60% cheaper price. You can buy Polo summer pullover for 400 dkk (50 eur), usual price is 800-1200 dkk.
Black Friday is a phrase created by the cops in 1961 in Philadelphia, it was used to describe the heavy traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving Day, it was forbidden to every traffic cop to take a holiday on that day because of such heavy traffic.
To increase the profit of rich people, their managers used marketing to popularize a shopping day, Friday, the day after Thanksgiving Day (Thursday). Much like Columbus Day, Thanksgiving is considered by some to be a “national day of mourning”, as a celebration of the cultural genocide and conquest of Native Americans by colonists. Since 1970, the United American Indians of New England, a protest group led by Frank “Wamsutta” James has accused the United States and European settlers of fabricating the Thanksgiving story and of whitewashing a genocide and injustice against Native Americans, and it has led a National Day of Mourning protest on Thanksgiving at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts in the name of social equality and in honor of political prisoners.
In the period from 1993 through 2001, Black Friday ranked from fifth to tenth on the list of busiest shopping days, with the last Saturday before Christmas usually taking first place. Since 2005, Black Friday is used as the busiest shopping day. In any case, to create a profit for the rich people, some states connected Thanksgiving Day with weekend, including Friday, in that way it is a four-day weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. If you are a worker in the US, politicians don’t give you a free day off because they like workers than because they are serving interest of rich people (riches finance political parties).
But people don’t get just a day off, they get bombarded with ads at every step in their life, riches and their managers created fake needs and desires in heads of the people, they make shitty products popular and trendy with spending millions for marketing, they created millions of consumers. 38% of Danish secondary school girls said in a poll that they would accept sex for a present/gift. Many US consumers come to camp over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired product. Different companies (Wallmart, Best Buy, Sears, etc) start to work 8 or 6 p.m. on a Thanksgiving Day and they work the whole night and the next day (Friday). Because of that, Black Friday is used to make profit but Friday is losing its sense because the cheaper prices starts already on Thursday. Now they use the terms “Gray Thursday” or “Brown Thursday”.
The sale day has caused a number of controversies over various practices:
Making unreasonable demands on staff, including requiring them to work under threat of termination, often long shifts, during Thanksgiving,
Health and safety risks due to insufficient staff for crowd management,
Selling “derivative” products manufactured just for Black Friday with lower specifications.
On Black Friday 2016, two brothers were shot, one fatally, in the parking lot of a mall in southern New Jersey early Friday, authorities said. In Reno, Nevada, a Walmart customer was gunned down during a fight over a parking spot just after doors were opened Thursday night. And in Tennessee, a person also was shot Thursday at a Memphis mall while shoppers were taking part in early sales.
On Black Friday 2012, two people were shot outside a Wal-Mart in Tallahassee, Florida, during a dispute over a parking space.
In 2008, a crowd of approximately 2,000 shoppers in Valley Stream, New York, waited outside for the 5:00 am opening of the local Wal-Mart. As opening time approached, the crowd grew anxious and when the doors were opened the crowd pushed forward, breaking the door down, a 34-year-old employee was trampled to death. Even when police arrived and attempted to render aid to the injured man, shoppers continued to pour in, shoving and pushing the officers as they made their way into the store.
Billionaires and their managers created the whole December as the Christmas shopping season.
Other countries try to copy American capitalists, most European countries since 2013.
This year business and media in Serbia tried to popularize Black Friday, but I don’t think there is the logic to make success from that: average salary is 400 eur, when people pay living expenses, they can’t save anything. Blic newspaper is bought by German Axel Springer and by Petreus (CIA), maybe they make propaganda against the Government, maybe they speak the truth, in the article about Black Friday, but Blic journalists say: most people just walked and watched and rarely somebody bought something, they don’t have money. Many shops were empty, without customers. Most shops made prices lower 20% and that’s not enough for the people.
My opinion is that Black Friday is useful to billionaires in the western world where people have purchasing power, it is not useful to them in poor countries. And poor countries stay poor because of individuals who take the whole profit for themselves. 1% of society get rich, 99% stay poor. Any innovation and science is without sense if it serves the interests of riches and not the whole society. You can make start up company in Serbia, if you sell products in the west, but if you produce in Serbia and sell it in Serbia, you will bankrupt. Only Fiat and car industry have interests to produce cars and parts in poor countries and to export to rich countries. Serbia has already 1st class products, Serbian raspberry is one of the best in the world, and only several individuals profit from that. Producers and workers get shit money. Producers got many years just one Eur per kilogram of raspberry, this year it was 1.2 eur and they demanded 2.3 Eur. Their production expenses also jumped 50%, weather destroyed 30% of raspberry production. But the exporters buy raspberry from them for shit price and export raspberry to Germany. Germany made the law, companies can put a label “it is produced in Germany” because western consumers believe that something produced in Germany is better than if it is produced in eastern Europe. Then German companies export raspberry to the other countries, and the end price for consumers in Copenhagen is 18 Eur per kilogram. When I visit food-stores in Copenhagen, 150 gram of raspberry cost 2.6 eur (20 dkk), somewhere even 22 dkk, that’s about 18 Eur/kg. That’s why Serbia stays poor country even when we have one of the best product quality in the world. Several exporters get rich, producers get shit. It means, if Serbs produce anything (to sell it in Serbia), people will not have money to buy that product and that manufacturer will bankrupt. Therefore, there is no sense to make any innovation in Serbia, to create start up company, to get investors, etc. It is useful only if you produce product for selling in the West. People must fight against rich people to get bigger salaries, riches (in this case exporters of raspberry) will never give better profit to producers and workers without the fight.
A good idea is to produces bikes in Serbia and to export to Denmark, Swiss, Sweden, Netherlands. Danes and Swiss will spend 1000 eur for bikes, even 2000 eur for “transport bikes”, Germans buy shitty bike for 50 eur, they don’t want to spend more. And more and more businesses sell online, without to have physical stores, just to sell to Danes, the store must be in Danish language. Zalando that sells shoes, clothing, is a good example, it is German company with websites and ads in Denmark and 14 other countries and they send products from Germany to many countries (they revenue is 3 billion Eur and profit 90 million (they hide little, to avoid taxes), they have 10 000 workers). If the bike is cheaper 500 Eur, Danes and Swiss will order it from Serbia, but a lot of money is necessary for online advertising.
